History of Cacao

Mayan Food of the Gods

Cacao has long been used by indigenous cultures. The first people to grow cacao trees were the Maya, one of the oldest civilizations on the American continent. They used the cocoa beans as a barter currency to exchange for food or clothes, as well as for preparing a bitter drink, known as Xocoatl.  It was an integral part of Mayan culture and religious activities, often used as a ceremonial offering and referred to as "Food of the Gods." Cacao is packed with vitamins and minerals, and provides natural energy through it's chemical constituents.

Health Benefits

More than hot cocoa...

We're all familiar with hot cocoa, but what's the difference between regular cocoa powder and medicinal, raw cacao? Well, they both taste delicious... but the difference is in how the beans are processed and cooked. Raw cacao is made from fermented beans and are processed in temperature regulated ovens, ensuring that all of the healthy fats, nutrients, and vitamins are preserved. Regular chocolate, or cocoa powder, is stripped of its nutrients and medicinal properties during the roasting process and then further added to with refined white sugars, milk fats, and artificial flavors that end up causing damage to the body.

Founder

Chantel is a yogi, dancer, sound healer, and the founder of Kakow.

In 2015 she received her bachelors degree in Merchandise Management and went on to work at Nike World Headquarters. During her time as a global merchandiser, she learned the value of distributing high-quality products that fill a need in the marketplace.

With a growing interest in alternative ways of life, Chantel left her job and set off for an 8 month journey through Central America. It was during her time in the mystical village of San Marcos La Laguna Atitlan, Guatemala, that she first connected with the spirit of Cacao.

Chantel is excited to share cacao because she believes that it has the power to revolutionize the way we think about wellness, community, and sustainable commerce.
